Tiny Island, Mighty MICE: How Singapore Attracts Big Events
Tiny Island, Mighty MICE: How Singapore Attracts Big Events
While the world of MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions) often sees major metropolises vying for the spotlight, Singapore presents a unique case. Our island nation, remarkably smaller than many of its counterparts on the global stage, consistently attracts some of the most prestigious events in the world.
From industry-defining conferences to cutting-edge technology showcases, Singapore consistently punches above its weight in the MICE landscape. In the past few months, the nation has played host to Asia Pacific Maritime 2024, International Dental Exhibition & Meeting Singapore 2024, and the Singapore Airshow 2024, among others. And in the months ahead, our island will welcome professionals from all over as they attend Seafood Expo Asia, ITB Asia, Medical Fair Asia 2024, OSEA Asia 2024, and other renowned events in Singapore’s hotels, exhibition halls, and conference venues.
The MICE sector: A beacon of recovery and growth
While MICE was one of the hardest hit sectors during the pandemic, it has since roared back with a vengeance. Singapore’s tourism sector, with MICE activities at its core, has emerged as a true success story in recent times. Surpassing initial forecasts, the industry has witnessed a significant resurgence, solidifying Singapore’s position as a global leader in the MICE arena.
Proof of this positive momentum is highlighted by international visitor arrivals, which reached 13.6 million in 2023, representing 71% of pre-pandemic levels and easily meeting the Singapore Tourism Board’s (STB) forecast of between 12 and 14 million visitors. Meanwhile, tourism receipts are estimated at between $24.5 and $26 billion, exceeding STB’s anticipated $18 to $21 billion estimations (set earlier in 2023) and delighting industry observers.
Speaking about this upturn, Melissa Ow, STB’s Chief Executive, said, “Singapore’s thriving pipeline of business and leisure offerings demonstrates our continued appeal as an attractive and trusted tourism destination, and reflects the unwavering confidence our partners have in Singapore.”
Governmental support: A key ingredient for success
Strong governmental support has been a catalyst for growth in the MICE sector, with STB leading the way. These efforts were kickstarted all the way back in 2022, when borders reopened, and the international events scene started to reawaken. Inking agreements with renowned names in the global events space, Comexposium, Silmo Singapore, and Vinexpo Asia, STB took proactive action to bring new and exciting conferences and exhibitions to Singapore. Through these initial agreements, Comexposium agreed to launch two anchor events on our island, while SILMO Singapore, Vinexpo Asia, and Milipol Asia-Pacific would bring their signature events to our shores.
Over the past year, the board continued to play an instrumental role in bringing new and significant business events into Singapore, successfully enticing transport logistic Southeast Asia, Bar Convent Singapore, the 25th World Congress of Dermatology 2023, Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) Global Conference 2023, and the International Trademark Association (INTA) 2023 Annual Meeting Live+ to our island.
Small island, big numbers: Booming event attendance breeds confidence
Having world-class events in your calendar is a positive sign for a MICE destination, but it’s not the be-all and end-all of a healthy industry. A thriving MICE sector has two key elements: An impressive calendar of events and inspiring attendance numbers at these events. This is where the rubber meets the road, and it’s also where our sector showcases its true recovery and growth.
According to The Straits Times, the most recent edition of the Singapore Airshow drew a record turnout of nearly 60,000 trade visitors in its first four days, eclipsing the previous record set during pre-COVID by 10%. “It clearly signals a renewed optimism and momentum driving the sector forward,” said the show’s Managing Director, Leck Chet Lam in a statement to mark the end of the show’s four-day trade segment.
Another event that attracted record numbers was the most recent Singapore FinTech Festival (SFF). A news release from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) revealed that the eighth edition of the festival drew a record 66,000 participants, up from 62,000 attendees in 2022. The event also extended its global reach with participants coming from 150 countries (compared to 115 in 2022), and a line-up of over 970 speakers gracing the event.
Just ahead, Medical Fair Asia 2024 is also expected to draw record-setting crowds when it takes place later in the year. The last event in 2022 attracted 600 exhibitors, 6,300 trade visitors, and contributed to 36,000 online interactions, and was hailed as a success following a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Organisers expect the 2024 edition at the prestigious Marina Bay Sands to draw significantly larger numbers – specifically, 1,050 exhibitors from 62 countries, 23 national pavilions and country groups, and 14,000 qualified trade buyers and decision makers from across Asia.
Reasons for optimism: Location, infrastructure, stability
In many ways, our tiny island contains the ideal ingredients for cooking up excellent events. This confluence of factors includes a rising Asia-Pacific MICE market, as well as Singapore’s world-class infrastructure, strategic location, stable and business-friendly environment, and collaboration ecosystem.
Asia-Pacific’s MICE market: On the rise
Examining the broader regional landscape, we see that the Asia-Pacific MICE market is projected to experience significant growth in the coming years.
A report by Grand View Research estimates the market size at US$183 billion (S$247 billion) in 2023 and expects it to grow at an impressive compound annual growth rate of 10% until (at least) 2030. The report suggests that “The MICE sector is also being driven by an increase in business travellers for corporate events and exhibitions, as well as by elements like employee engagement.” This growth presents a unique opportunity for Singapore, as we are strategically located at the heart of this dynamic region.
World-class infrastructure: Seamless connections for outstanding experiences
Excellent infrastructure is an absolute necessity for event destinations, and this is a key area that is allowing Singapore to capitalise on the regional MICE boom. Our state-of-the-art infrastructure begins with a well-connected and efficient transportation network that includes the renowned Changi Airport, a comprehensive public transportation system, and a readily available private transportation fleet, ensuring seamless travel for delegates arriving from all corners of the globe.
Beyond transportation, Singapore offers a wide range of high-quality venues, catering to diverse event needs. From convention centres like the Singapore Expo to intimate meeting rooms in luxury hotels, our island provides a flexible and sophisticated environment for events of all sizes. Additionally, Singapore’s advanced technology infrastructure ensures seamless event execution. High-speed internet connectivity, cutting-edge audio-visual equipment, and readily available IT support services empower event organisers to flawlessly execute their vision and deliver impactful experiences for attendees.
Strategic location: A gateway to the region… and the world
Our strategic location in Southeast Asia is another key advantage that leading players in the MICE industry are capitalising on. Nestled in the heart of a rapidly developing region, Singapore offers easy access to a large and growing market.
This geographical positioning makes Singapore an ideal destination for regional events, attracting attendees from neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Moreover, Singapore’s strong air connectivity with major global hubs further expands its reach, attracting international participation from Europe, the United States, and beyond.
Stable, business-friendly environment: Fostering confidence and growth
While our nation offers many tangible benefits to international event organisers, businesses and travellers, sometimes it’s the intangibles that speak loudest. Here, Singapore steps up to the plate too, with the country’s reputation for stability and its business-friendly environment playing a crucial role in attracting MICE events.
Specifically, Singapore’s political stability and robust legal framework provide event organisers with a sense of security and predictability. Additionally, the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and streamlining regulations creates an environment that is both welcoming and efficient for businesses. This focus on business-friendliness extends to a highly skilled workforce with expertise across diverse industries.
Attendees can be confident that they will find the necessary support and expertise to ensure a successful and productive event experience. Government agencies like STB further strengthen this commitment by offering a range of initiatives and support programs specifically designed to assist event organisers, such as the Business Events in Singapore (BEIS) programme – an assistance scheme that offers customised support such as help in securing venues, introductions with leading government agencies and business partners, marketing and publicity support, as well as assistance in hosting impactful sustainable events.
An ecosystem of innovation and collaboration
The MICE sector is unique in the sense that it thrives on collaboration, even amidst competition. Post-pandemic, event organisers and audiences across the nation have shown a willingness to embrace hybrid and virtual formats, allowing wider accessibility and participation, and opening new opportunities for event and conference organisers.
Additionally, Singapore’s commitment to fostering collaboration extends beyond individual events. Our nation’s MICE ecosystem cultivates a sense of community and facilitates networking opportunities for attendees throughout their stay. Dedicated industry meet-ups and networking events are often organised alongside major conferences, creating a dynamic environment where attendees can forge valuable connections and share ideas – and Singapore has the amenities, such as a wide selection of co-working spaces and meeting rooms across the country, to enable these collaborations to happen.
A global stage awaits: What’s next for Singapore MICE sector?
Singapore’s MICE sector stands poised for continued growth and leadership in the global arena. The sector’s positive performance and forward momentum paint a clear picture of resilience and potential, and looking ahead, Singapore’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainability ensures its continued appeal to MICE organisers seeking a dynamic and successful event platform.
Recent partnerships with global MICE players like the Italian Exhibition Group (IEG) further solidify Singapore’s position as a preferred destination. These collaborations not only bring prestigious events to Singapore, but also showcase our city-state’s unwavering commitment to fostering a world-class MICE ecosystem. As Singapore continues to embrace the future of events, we can expect even greater heights to be achieved, solidifying our position among the leaders of the global MICE landscape.
Singapore: Forging a New Standard for Business Events
Singapore: Forging a New Standard for Business Events
In these extraordinary times, Singapore continues to stand as a premier business events destination connecting the world to Asia. While COVID-19 has altered the events landscape, the fundamentals that have made Singapore successful – its vibrant business environment, outstanding infrastructure and future-ready workforce – remain unchanged.
Raising the bar for health and safety
As international business travel resumes, Singapore is committed to safeguarding the well-being of visiting delegates and staff. It remains committed to upholding the highest standards of health and safety and to giving all its visitors peace of mind when they come to the Lion City. Hotels, restaurants, exhibition halls and other establishments have adopted new Safe Management Measures, such as social distancing and heightened cleaning of premises, to ensure reduced public health risk.
Beyond these, the Singapore Government also launched SG Clean, a national mark of excellence for cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control. SG Clean was launched in February 2020 by the National Environment Agency to encourage the nation, from individuals to local businesses, to elevate cleanliness and public hygiene in Singapore and safeguard public health. Many tourism establishments such as hotels, retail outlets, restaurants, tourist attractions and major business event venues have undergone rigorous audits to certify that they have adhered to sector-specific sanitation and hygiene checklists. Since March 2020, more than 5000 establishments, including Suntec City Convention & Exhibition Centre, Resorts World Sentosa Convention Centre, Sands Expo and Convention Centre at Marina Bay Sands and Singapore Expo and MAX Atria have obtained the SG Clean Quality Mark.
Innovating for the future of business events
As Singapore moves towards safe resumption of business events, it is also turning to innovative digital solutions to support virtual and hybrid business events. The return of bigger exhibitions and conferences in the city state looks highly promising after a successful pilot hybrid business event just last month. The event, the 2020 IEEE International Conference on Computational Electromagnetics, was held at Resorts World Sentosa from August 24th to 26th, with 50 onsite attendees and approximately 1000 more participating virtually. The country is now trialing pilot events with an expanded attendee capacity of up to 250. Among the pilot events taking place with this expanded attendee capacity is the Singapore International Energy Week Conference, another hybrid event which is scheduled to be held at Marina Bay Sands from October 26th to 30th.
Singapore’s events industry is also implementing unique solutions to meet the emerging demands of a new era of business travel. Local companies are reinventing themselves – from enhancing digital offerings to developing forward-looking concepts for hybrid and virtual events.
For example, in June, homegrown event organiser Web in Travel (WiT) engaged more than 750 tourism business leaders to discuss the future of the industry in a global virtual summit. During the dinner break, WiT sent curated care packages to Singapore-based attendees and later even held a virtual dance party. With this mindset of continuous innovation, it is no wonder that Singapore was recently named the world’s most competitive economy for the second consecutive year (IMD World Competitiveness Ranking, 2020).
Undoubtedly, this transition from the traditional live ‘in-person’ event format to new digital and hybrid formats will also see a need for more talent in the industry. In the coming months, this sector will need more people who possess the relevant technical skills, extensive event management experience and who are also attuned to shifting trends in the industry, in order to engage audiences through physical and digital platforms.
Singapore’s MICE industry remains innovative and resilient in a post-pandemic world
Singapore has always been a leading destination for international business events. For 18 consecutive years, the country has been ranked as Asia Pacific’s top meeting city (ICCA Global Rankings, 2019), thus affirming its position as a leading MICE hub in the region. The COVID-19 pandemic may have shaken up the industry rather badly, but it is already shaking off the dust and looking to embrace new technologies to adapt to the ‘new normal’.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has fiercely disrupted the industry, it has also created an opportunity for all stakeholders to innovate, upskill and build more resilient businesses. Singapore will, as always, lead the way in establishing safe operating standards and setting the benchmark for the future of innovative business events in a post-pandemic world.
Singapore is where great minds converge, connect and create the future of business.
